Augmented Reality (AR) on mobile phones

Here we go again. A few years back, AR has targeted to mobile phones to draw people’s attention in which you can use AR technology as an application. For instance, Wikitude World Browser is one the first applications which was able to use on some smart phones  like T-Mobile G1, Nokia N97 and iPhone 3GS, 4. FYI, AR applications can only work with certain mobile Operating Systems such as Google Android OS, Symbian OS (Nokia) and iPhone OS. Why? Because, all those phones provide Compass, Accelerometer, GPS and Camera that the browser requires.

The way the AR browser works is tremendous. It scans your environment for feature matching using built-in camera and the gadget’s sensors. The relevant information will be exposed in the cam right where the real object is placed. Wikitude Browser detects millions of places so that the user can readily go for the ones around them which they prefer. The nearest spots of all local content providers are collected by the browser. It uses the terminology  “ POI (Point Of Interest)"  or “World” in the display to represent each place. Each information of the local worlds nearby you is listed on the start-up. E.g. Information of places can be checked on Wikipedia. Then, you can watch it in a List, on a Map or in the Cam (AR-View). This way you will always know your destination regardless of where you are.
For those who want to get specific places, Wikitude provides a powerful Location Aware Search, that scans all local Worlds for the specific term. (E.g. enter “Starbucks” to get everything related to Starbucks around you).

On the other hand, there are some AR applications like Wikitude World Browser such as Layer and Yelp. They all function similarly but, each application has its own way of geo-referencing. According to this article, someone needs not to worry about getting lost and finding their favourite spots as long as they own one of those smart phones. So, I’d say it’s amazing. What do you say?
